Memphis, Tennessee – March 29, 2018: The FedEx Event Center and the First Tennessee Foundation Visitors Center, both located at Shelby Farms Park, have each earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED) building certifications. The buildings were constructed as a part of a multi-year park-wide renovation project called the “Heart of the Park.”
The design and construction of these buildings, located in the largest urban park in the country, were guided by sustainable design and building principles that take into account social, environmental and economic priorities. This results in high-performing buildings that are more energy efficient, use less water, and have higher indoor air quality. One example is the use of low-emitting adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, floorings, composite woods and agri-fiber products in each facility.
Project highlights for The FedEx Event Center include:
- A potable water savings potential of 35 percent when compared to other water use baselines.
- When compared to other typical buildings of this type, an energy cost savings of 26 percent is expected by using efficient HVAC systems and smart building construction.
- A diversion rate of 65 percent of the on-site generated construction waste from the landfill through material recycling.
The Visitors Center achieved silver certification, and project highlights include:
- A potable water savings potential of 47 percent when compared to other water use baselines. Additionally, the landscaping and irrigations systems have been designed to reduce potable water consumption for irrigation by 55 percent.
- When compared to other typical buildings of this type, an energy cost savings of 24 percent is expected by using efficient HVAC systems, and smart building construction.
- 76 percent of the on-site generated construction waste was diverted from the landfill.
- Of the total building materials purchased, 23 percent (by cost) were manufactured or extracted within 500 miles of the project site.
Both projects were designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects and constructed by Montgomery Martin Contractors. Entegrity served as the LEED consultant and provided energy modeling and fundamental and enhanced commissioning services for the projects.
